ARC FLASH COMPLIANCE

2 days
1.6 CEUs
Lecture
8:00am-4:30pm

Tuition USD $750

While electric shock hazards have been studied since the introduction of electricity, in recent years the dangers of arc flash have come to the forefront of electrical safety programs and procedures. Arc flash hazards pose an everyday risk in all types of facilities, possessing the potential to destroy equipment and seriously injure, or kill, employees. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have collaborated to develop regulations and standards that best protect personnel and equipment against electrical hazards, including arc flash. Four separate industry standards focus on the prevention of arc flash incidents: NFPA 70, also known as the National Electrical Code(NEC), NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, IEEE Standard 1584 Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations, and OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910 Subpart S. Both OSHA and NEC refer to NFPA 70E for arc flash compliance. Understanding the relationships between these regulations and standards and what each requires for arc flash compliance can prevent citations and fines.

Learning Objectives
• Overview of OSHA, NFPA 70E® and IEEE applicable regulations and standards

• Detailed process for having an arc flash hazard analysis performed

• The causes and effects of an arc flash event

• Identify types and classes of personal protective equipment (PPE)

• Interpret arc flash hazard analysis results

• Hazard mitigation techniques

Who Should Attend
Designed for personnel responsible for electrical system evaluation and safety compliance. Familiarity with NFPA 70E® or IEEE 1584 is beneficial but not required.
