BASIC ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING

4 days
3.2 CEUs
Hands-on
8:00am-4:30pm

Tuition USD $1185

Troubleshooting electrical systems is an essential skill for personnel that perform maintenance tasks in industrial, commercial or utility facilities. Often the inexperienced troubleshooter will mistake symptoms for problems. For example, when a fuse in an electrical circuit blows- the maintenance personnel replaces the fuse. Excess current caused the fuse to blow. Excess current could have been caused by: overload on the load, short circuit between the wires, grounded wires, short circuit in the load, ground in the load, voltage spike, voltage droop, etc. If the maintenance person does not troubleshoot the circuit prior to replacing the fuse and restoring power, the electrical problem is still there. Power systems that develop a number of issues can function for years. Then, one more small problem occurs and the whole electrical system fails. Locating and correcting the last problem will not necessarily restore operation. All the other electrical issues may not allow the system to be energized so they must be identified and corrected first.

Learning Objectives
•Safety hazards of troubleshooting electrical systems and components

•Reading and interpreting wiring and ladder diagrams

•Basic troubleshooting methods for motors, contactors, transformers, relays, lighting and more

•Recognize power quality problems

•Multimeters and miscellaneous test equipment used in lab for troubleshooting

Who Should Attend
Designed for electrical technicians needing a safe and systematic troubleshooting system above the electronic level; non-electrical personnel requiring troubleshooting skills; technicians that service and repair industrial electrical equipment or electricians that have primarily construction experience and need to improve their troubleshooting skills.
